How to get rid of water spots on your car
Those chalky circles on glass and paint are mostly dried minerals. Light ones lift easily. Old ones can be stubborn.
Where water spots on a car come from
Water spots on a car form when droplets evaporate and leave their minerals behind. Lawn sprinklers are a big source in many Peninsula neighborhoods, and so is washing in direct sun where water dries before you can towel it off.
Morning fog and drizzle can leave lighter spotting too, especially on dark paint. The more mineral-rich the water and the hotter the panel, the more noticeable the rings.
Glass shows spots too. Side windows facing a sprinkler head often get a cloudy band along the bottom that slowly gets thicker over a season.
Simple steps for light spots
Fresh spots often sit on top of the paint and come off with a proper wash. Work in shade on a cool panel so the water does not dry mid-wash.
- Rinse the car and wash with pH-neutral car shampoo.
- Wash and rinse one section at a time.
- Dry right away with a large, soft microfiber towel.
- Move the car or adjust sprinklers that hit it overnight.
What to avoid
Do not scrub spots with an abrasive pad or a kitchen sponge. Avoid strong acidic household cleaners on paint and trim, and never use household glass cleaner on tinted windows, since some formulas can harm the film.
Letting the car air dry in the sun is how many spots start, so towel dry instead.
