Why rainy season car care matters
Rainy season car care is mostly about road film and moisture. Rain picks up oil, brake dust and grit from 101, 280 and El Camino Real and sprays it onto lower panels and glass. As drops dry, they leave spots.
Inside, wet shoes and umbrellas soak carpets and mats. Fog and cold mornings fog the inside glass and spread film.
The first big storm after a dry summer often brings the dirtiest runoff, since months of oil and dust wash off the road at once.
Easy habits through the wet months
Small steps keep the car in good shape until a full clean.
Rubber all-weather mats make wet months easier. They hold water you can dump out instead of soaking the carpet underneath.
- Rinse and wash with pH-neutral car shampoo after a stretch of storms.
- Pull out wet floor mats and dry them indoors.
- Keep a small towel for umbrellas instead of the seat.
- Check that wipers are clean so they do not smear grit.
- Clean the inside windshield to reduce fogging and glare.
What not to do
Do not count on rain to clean the car, and avoid wiping wet road film off with a dry towel. Turning heat on high to dry soaked carpet may leave a musty smell in padding.
Avoid dish soap, which removes slickness from the paint right when you want water to bead and run off.
If water keeps collecting on the floor, there may be a leak or clogged drain. NOVA does not do mechanical work, so have a mechanic check it.
