Why tree sap ends up on your car
If you want to know how to remove tree sap from your car, it helps to know what you are fighting. Oaks, pines and redwoods line many streets and driveways from Woodside to Los Altos, and they drip sticky resin most heavily in warm, dry months.
Fresh sap is soft and tacky. After a few hot afternoons it hardens into a clear or amber bead that grips the clear coat. The longer it sits in the sun, the harder it is to lift and the more likely it is to leave a dull mark behind.
What you can safely do right away
Act while the sap is still soft. Gentle steps are the safest place to start, and most fresh drops come off with patience rather than force.
- Rinse the area with cool water to remove loose grit first.
- Wash the panel with a pH-neutral car shampoo and a soft microfiber mitt.
- Let warm, soapy water soak on the drop for a minute, then lift it with light pressure.
- Dry with a clean microfiber towel, patting rather than dragging.
- Park away from dripping trees for the next few weeks if you can.
What not to do
Do not pick at hardened sap with a fingernail, razor or scrub pad. Abrasive tools leave fine scratches that are harder to fix than the sap itself.
Skip dish soap, which strips the paint of its slickness and dries out trim. Avoid heat guns or hair dryers too; heat can bake sap into the clear coat instead of softening it safely.
