Car care guide

How do you clean stains on car seats?

Most seat stains improve with the right approach. Some do not, and it helps to know which is which.

Common stains on car seats, and why they set

Stains on car seats usually come from coffee, soda, food, sunscreen, makeup, ink, mud and kid snacks. Fabric absorbs them quickly, and leather can darken in the grain.

Heat speeds up setting. A seat that sits in a sunny parking lot in Sunnyvale or Mountain View all afternoon can lock in a stain faster than one in a shaded garage.

Light gray and beige fabric shows almost everything, while dark fabric can hide stains until sun hits them at the right angle.

Gentle first steps

Treat fabric and leather differently, and test anything in a hidden spot first.

Take a photo of the stain before you start. If you later book NOVA, the photo helps us quote accurately.

For stains you cannot identify, plain cool water is the safest test. If it does not move, stop and leave it for a professional.

  • Blot fresh spills with a clean towel; do not rub.
  • On fabric, dampen with cool water and blot again from the outside in.
  • On leather, wipe with a barely damp microfiber cloth, then dry.
  • Keep the seat from getting soaked.
  • Let the area air dry with windows slightly open in a safe spot.

What not to use

Avoid bleach, household stain removers, nail polish remover and magic-eraser style sponges, which can lighten fabric or strip leather finish. Do not scrub with stiff brushes or use heat to dry.

For leather seats, see our light leather care guide; NOVA does not offer leather conditioning.

Rubbing alcohol and acetone can pull dye out of fabric and damage leather finish in seconds, so leave those for other jobs.

When to book NOVA for seat stains

The Interior Detail cleans seats along with carpets, mats and the rest of the cabin. For heavy or numerous stains, Elite Restoration includes heavy stain spot removal and is quoted after photos.

Ink, dye transfer from jeans, old set-in stains and discoloration from sun can be permanent. NOVA will tell you before booking which stains are likely to lighten and which may stay.

Perforated leather needs extra care, since liquid can slip into the holes. NOVA works with very little moisture on those seats.
