Why is the inside of my windshield hazy?
That foggy film you notice when driving into low sun is usually residue on the glass, not the outside weather.
What causes a hazy inside windshield
A hazy inside windshield is usually a thin film from interior plastics releasing vapors on hot days, plus fingerprints, breath and dust. It often looks worse when driving into low morning or evening sun.
Coastal fog and cool, damp mornings add condensation, which spreads the film around. Cars parked in the sun all summer tend to build film faster.
Smokers, vape users and cars with lots of hand contact on the glass see haze build faster. Air fresheners and some interior dressings can also add an oily layer.
How to clean it yourself
Two clean towels and patience work better than a lot of spray.
Hold a flashlight at an angle against the glass to check your work. Streaks and missed spots show up right away.
Keep your glass towels separate from other towels and wash them without fabric softener, which leaves a film.
- Use a clean, dry microfiber towel made for glass.
- Lightly mist the towel, not the glass, so liquid does not drip onto the dash.
- Wipe in straight lines across, then buff with a second dry towel.
- Reach the lower corners with the back of your hand on the towel.
- Clean the rearview mirror and its base too.
What to avoid
Do not use household glass cleaner on tinted windows; some formulas can harm window film. Avoid paper towels, which leave lint, and avoid spraying cleaner straight at the glass where it drips onto the dash and electronics.
Wiping with your sleeve or a used towel only moves the film around.
Defroster lines on the rear window are delicate. Wipe along them, not across them, and never scrape the inside of the rear glass.
