How to clean dog nose prints on windows

Happy dogs press against the glass. The smudges are easy to clean once you know the right approach.

Why dog nose prints on windows smear

Dog nose prints on windows are a mix of moisture, natural oils and drool, often with a little dirt from the park. They dry into cloudy smudges that smear when you try a quick wipe.

Rear side windows take the most, especially on trips to dog-friendly spots like Shoreline or the Baylands. Sun on the glass bakes the film in.

Dogs also rub their faces on door panels and lean against the back of the front seats, so smudges spread past the glass. A seat cover helps protect the rear bench.

How to clean them

Glass made for automotive use and clean towels are all you need. Work in shade.

Lower the window fully afterward and check the top edge that hides inside the door. Nose prints often reach right up there.

  • Roll the window down an inch to reach the top edge.
  • Lightly mist a microfiber glass towel, not the window.
  • Wipe in straight lines, then buff dry with a second towel.
  • Clean the door panel and window switch area below the print.
  • Wipe the outside glass separately.

What to avoid

Do not use household glass cleaner on tinted windows; some formulas can damage the film. Avoid razor blades and abrasive pads on the inside of glass, which can scratch tint and defroster lines.

Skip paper towels. They shed lint and smear the oils around.

Do not let your dog lick a freshly cleaned window until it is dry. Most products should stay off pets. Pet wipes and baby wipes leave a film of their own on glass, which shows up as a haze in direct sun.

When to book NOVA

An Interior Detail covers inside glass, doors, seats, carpets and mats. If your dog also leaves fur everywhere, read our pet hair guide; heavy pet hair is quoted after photos, and Elite Restoration includes pet hair removal.

Scratches in tint film from claws will not come out with cleaning, and NOVA does not repair tint or offer odor treatment.

Between visits, keep a dedicated glass towel in the door pocket and give the rear windows a quick buff after each trip.
