How to clean summer dust off your car safely
Dry months mean a fine gray film on everything. It looks harmless, but how you remove it matters.
Why summer dust on your car piles up
Summer dust on your car builds quickly because the Peninsula sees little or no rain from late spring through fall. Dry hills, construction, gravel driveways and leaf blowers all add fine particles to the air.
Without rain to rinse it, dust settles in layers. Morning dew can turn it into a light film that dries into streaks.
Homes along unpaved roads in Los Altos Hills, Woodside and Portola Valley often see the heaviest dust, and so do cars parked near construction sites.
The gentle way to remove dust
A rinse and a proper wash are safest. Dust is fine, but it is still grit.
Rinsing loosens the layer so the mitt glides instead of grinding. Rinse the mitt often, since it fills with fine grit fast.
- Rinse the car thoroughly to float off the loose layer.
- Wash panel by panel with a pH-neutral car shampoo, rinsing the mitt in a second bucket.
- Use a separate towel for glass.
- Dry with clean microfiber, then shake towels out away from the car.
- Vacuum interior vents and wipe the dash with a slightly damp cloth.
Why you should not wipe dry dust
Do not swipe dust off with your hand, a dry rag or a feather duster on paint. Each pass drags grit across the clear coat and adds to fine swirl marks over time.
Writing in the dust is fun for kids, but it scratches too. On the inside, dry dusting the dash spreads particles into vents and seams.
