How to clean pollen off your car safely
A yellow-green film every spring is normal here. The trick is removing it without grinding it into the paint.
Why pollen on your car shows up every spring
Pollen on your car arrives in waves from late winter into spring, when oaks, pines and many street trees release it. Cars parked outside overnight collect a fine layer, and morning fog or dew turns it into a paste.
Pollen grains are tiny but they can be slightly abrasive, and when wet they leave sticky residue in seams, cowls and around wipers.
Yellow pollen also settles into the gap under the hood and around the windshield cowl, where it can get pulled into the cabin air intake. That is one reason the dash and vents can look dusty in April and May.
How to remove it gently
Water first, then a soft wash. Pollen comes off easily once it is floated away from the surface.
- Rinse the whole car top to bottom to flush loose pollen.
- Wash with pH-neutral car shampoo and a soft microfiber mitt.
- Rinse the mitt often so you are not dragging pollen around.
- Flush the cowl area at the base of the windshield.
- Dry with a clean microfiber towel.
Habits to skip during pollen season
Do not brush pollen off with your hand, a duster or a dry towel. Dry wiping drags particles across the clear coat and can leave fine swirl marks.
Dish soap is not a shortcut. It removes the slickness from paint and can dry out rubber seals. Also keep cabin air recirculating less often and wipe interior vents, since pollen gets inside too.
