How to clean sticky cupholders and console
Old drips, melted candy and dust turn the center of your car tacky. A gentle, patient clean fixes most of it.
Why sticky cupholders and console build up
Sticky cupholders and console areas collect every drip from coffee, soda, smoothies and juice boxes. Sugar dries into a tacky layer that grabs dust and crumbs.
Hot cabins on summer afternoons soften the residue and spread it further into seams, around the shifter and into the gap beside the seats.
Phone mounts, coins, pens, receipts and sunglasses also collect in the console, and every one of them traps a little dirt. Clearing the clutter is half the job. Spills in the console often run down into the storage bin below, so check under the lid as well as the cupholders themselves.
A simple way to clean it
Moisture softens sugar. Let it sit before you wipe.
Cotton swabs and a soft old toothbrush are useful for the corners and around the shifter where towels do not reach.
- Remove any removable cupholder inserts and rubber liners.
- Soak the inserts in warm water with a little pH-neutral car shampoo.
- Lay a damp microfiber towel over sticky spots for a minute, then wipe.
- Use a soft detailing brush for seams and buttons.
- Dry everything before putting inserts back.
What to avoid
Do not spray cleaners straight at buttons, screens or switches. Liquid can seep into electronics. Avoid abrasive pads and harsh household cleaners on glossy trim, since they scratch and haze it.
Use a dry soft cloth on screens, and only a slightly damp one if needed.
Piano black trim scratches very easily. Use the softest cloth you have and very light pressure. Leave touchscreens for last and use a separate dry cloth, so you are not wiping sugar residue across the display.
